Almost 5 years ago ICNZ was born.
Hamish Robertson and myself had an idea to bring a format of amateur MMA to NZ like had never been done before.
We set about organising an event at the Auckland Boxing Association and combined B-Class MMA and submission wrestling fights to make up a small but exciting fight-night. About 300 people ended up witnessing the beginning of NZ’s longest running MMA event.

Since then there has been a lot of changes, but one thing has remained constant.

Leading up to ICNZ 1(then known as Inspirit Challenge NZ) Hamish and I knew what we wanted from gloves, we approached several retailers, none of whom were willing to take a leap of faith and support this fledgling brand. Until we touched base with Brett. Brett understood we were working out of our own pockets and was more than willing to help out. Brett had supported the nations kickboxing community for years, but MMA was relatively new and small to NZ. Never the less Brett lent his support without question, and continues to do so 5 years later.

I am extremely grateful to Brett and NZBoxer for that faith and belief in the early days, and believe them to be a true hero of NZ MMA as we know it today.
